Urban Economics
Dr Ferdinand Rauch, Associate Professor of Economics, Brasenose College, University of Oxford

Dr Ferdinand Rauch, tutor in economics at Brasenose College, University of Oxford is interviewed by Edward Howell, a geography undergraduate at the college. They discuss a variety of issues facing the discipline today including the rapid urbanisation of Africa, and China's role in this process, as well as poverty, human rights and development aid in relation to cities and towns. The conversation also tackles globalisation, with its short term costs for some people against longer term benefits for the majority. Ferdinand and Edward also talk about their experiences at Brasenose College, and how the University has positively impacted on their lives, for example through playing music in the chapel. Ferdinand concludes with advice for young people who are thinking of applying to Oxford, saying that passion for the subject and a willingness to think creatively are important traits of any successful applicant.
