The Origins of a Dinner Suit
Prof
Denis Noble, University of Oxford recounts the story of how his dinner
suit was made. As a young student at University College London and from a
humble background, his parents couldn’t afford to buy him a dinner
suit, but as they were professional tailors, his father decided to make
one for his studious son. Unfortunately his father died before he could
finish the dinner suit, but his mother was able to finish, and to all
intents and purposes it’s still the same dinner suit 60 years later. The
message behind the story is that regardless of your origins, anyone can
succeed and make something of themselves, so long as they work hard and
make use of their natural talents.
