ACADEMIC POSITION:
Associate Professor, Cardiovascular & Ion Channel Signaling Laboratory, Department of Physiology, Seoul National University, College of Medicine

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Our research team aims to identify mechanisms leading to the pathogenesis of cardiac diseases (heart failure, sudden cardiac death, atrial fibrillation), hoping to provide novel therapeutic strategies to prevent and cure heart diseases. In particular, we are focusing on nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species signalling in the regulation of ion channels, Ca2+ handling proteins, myofilament proteins and cardiac contractile function. In addition, we are trying to understand free fatty acids and cardiac metabolism and their interplay with Ca2+ handlings in the regulation of cardiac function in healthy and diseased hearts. Furthermore, we will to expend our research on exercise and the protective mechanisms for cardiovascular diseases. Currently we use hypertension, atrial fibrillation, transverse aortic constriction-induced heart failure models.

Essential techniques include: sarcomere/cell length and real time Ca2+ fluorescent measurements, patch-clamp techniques in single isolated myocytes, immunoblotting & co-immunoprecipitation, confocal microscopy, real time RT-PCR. We also conduct Metabolomics and Proteomics through collaboration.
