Gijsbert Werner is a Newton International Fellow
at the Department of Zoology. His research interests lie in the
evolution and maintenance of cooperation. He applies economics and
evolutionary theory to study cooperative interactions within and between
species, including cooperation within species and among humans.
During his tenure as a JRF Gijsbert will develop a large-scale database of insect sociality, mapping this dataset to a massive phylogeny of insects to elucidate large-scale and ancient patterns of eusociality evolution, with a view to establishing the relative importance of potential explanatory factors for the emergence of eusocial societies.
