Dr Edward Gelles
Author of The Jewish Journey

Edward Gelles was born in Vienna in 1927 and came to England with his parents in 1938. He was educated at the City of Oxford High School and Haberdashers Aske’s School, Hampstead. He won a Brackenbury Scholarship at Balliol College, Oxford in 1944, read Chemistry and received degrees of M.A. and D.Phil. in 1951. He was a Ramsay Memorial Fellow at University College London, a Research Associate at the University of California, Berkeley, and Lecturer at Glasgow University.

His lifelong interests have been European history, art and antiques, and in more recent years Jewish history and genealogy. His extensive publications in this field include many articles in specialist journals and six books, which are itemised in his "Papers of Edward Gelles" on the website of Balliol College Archives and Manuscripts.
