Prof Christina Boswell from the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh delivers the inaugural Omar Azfar Lecture on Social Justice at Balliol College, University of Oxford. Prof Boswell criticises the increasing reliance on performance targets in various sectors of government policy, focusing on the area of immigration and asylum. She argues that successive numerical targets have simplified and distorted political debate, and have suppressed moral deliberation on the rights of immigrants and refugees. The lecture was introduced by Sir Drummond Bone, Master of Balliol College, Dr Jeremy Burchardt, a friend and fellow student of Omar Azfar during his time at Balliol, and Mursaleena Islam, Omar Azfar’s wife.
