Launch of THE BEATING HEART by Oxford Professor Robin Choudhury
Robin Choudhury is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Oxford University and Fellow of Balliol College. On Wednesday 9th October 2024, his new book, THE BEATING HEART, was launched at Daunt’s Bookshop in Bloomsbury, London. The Director of Voices from Oxford, Dr SungHee Kim, arranged a video recording of the event and speeches by the Publisher, Head of Zeus (Part of Bloomsbury Publishing), and by Robin himself. The book is a beautifully ilustrated journey of discovery across four millenia of human history showing how the heart has been represented in art, philosophy, literature, and science. One of the scientific discoveries featured in the book was represented in person since chapter 8 features the work of Denis Noble 2/3rds of a century ago: the first unravelling of the process by which the heart excites itself through the electrical interactions between its transport proteins and the membrane potential of its pacemaker cells. Balliol College was also represented by its Dante expert, Professor Elena Lombardi, Praefectus of Holywell Manor. The book features Dante’s Vita Nuova (1294): Lo spirito della vita, lo quale dimora nella segretissima camera del cuore (The Spirit of Life which dwells within the most secret chamber of the heart).
